  1. I heard about Urban Sketchers from a librarian who just retired from Brock University's Marilyn I Walker School of Fine and Performing Arts where I am an undergrad in the Honours Studio Art BA degree. I am lucky to live beside the Fairview Mall in St. Catharines where I've lived five years. I call the mall my studio and nobody has complained about me sketching patrons as long as I don't sell anything. I've grown fond of observing and being sensitive to others who exhibit a multitude of gestures by just being themselves. These are the best models because they don't know they are posing and are so unpretentious. I've learned a little about attending these public groups. I try not to make eye contact while I am sketching. This seems to maintains a dynamic tension which does not create any sense of invasiveness or personal connection. If I'm not in the mall I am at Starbucks just about every day. Nice ambience. Cheers to everyone over there. I plan to get on the GO soon. Jim
